Tumblr: *rolls out “best stuff first”*

My blog:

on the one hand this is a joke post because lol i have never made a good post in my life, but also, if i hadn’t made the connection

between this update and my sudden nosedive in activity, i would have been really fucking discouraged about all the shit i’ve been working on lately. i guarantee there are people on tumblr right now who haven’t made that connection, and who are trying to figure out why suddenly no one likes anything they’ve made. and that fucking sucks.

Reminder to go into your settings and turn off ‘Best Stuff First’ because my activity’s tanked a couple days ago for no reason so this stuff IS happening.

You WILL miss content with that setting on.

i ain’t joking when i say that my activity looks JUST like this too and i wasn’t sure why

I’m sure you all have seen posts like this before, but you will be missing out on a lot of content if you have this feature activated.

Fyi, folks, this account has been hit pretty hard by this change. Engagement is currently at about 30% of normal, which means that there are a lot of people missing out on informative posts like this one about original works on AO3.

In order to change this setting on mobile (it’s unclear if it’s available on desktop at the moment), view your blog by tapping the little silhouette in the bottom right of your screen, then tap the settings gear in the top right of your screen. From there, select Global Settings (iOS) or General Settings (Android), then Dashboard Preferences, and toggle the switch for “Best Stuff First.”

Thanks to everybody who follows this account, everybody who reblogs and/or likes the posts here, and everybody who joins in with events like Fandom First Friday! You’re all awesome!

Hey guys, normally I don’t reblog on this account, but I wanted to help make more people aware of this. It’s probably going to harm every single person you follow, so please consider turning it off. I’ve noticed a drop from normal as well and although I try to not let note counts bother me, I have to admit it’s pretty discouraging.

Like me, you may have seen some posts in the last couple weeks that said Tumblr was implementing a new chat feature, that showed a little green circle in tumblr messaging when someone’s online recently. Just like FB messenger has.

Like me, you might also have been confused by the posts, due to never actually seeing the feature in action or seeing an option to disable it.

BUT IT’S NOW LIVE. IT IS ON BY DEFAULT.

If you’d prefer to turn it off, you can do so in settings:

See the option below:

This is what it looks like in action. In the messenger dropdown:

and in an open messenger:

Please feel free to spread this widely. That includes reposting without credit, which I encourage anyone to do if you were gonna reblog but don’t recognize the “OP.”

On mobile its Account > Global Settings > Privacy

You’re an artist having a wonderful day posting your art to Tumblr dot com. You don’t always get a ton of attention, but that’s okay. But then one day somebody reblogs one of your posts…

You’re super excited! Someone appreciates your hard work. Then you see the profile picture, and it’s something like this…

[Screenshot of a Tumblr notification that shows an icon that looks suspiciously like a white girl in a bikini showing off her butt, though it’s so small it’s hard to tell. “axpgthglewut reblogged your photo.”]

You’re suspicious at this point, but mildly optimistic. Maybe someone likes both T&A and your Steven Universe fan art. Then you go to their blog and…

[Screenshot of my drawing of Lapis Lazuli. My original description was replaced with the text “you want to fool around?” and a link that leads to God knows where.]

It’s happened. Again. For some bizarre reason a p/orn bot is using your completely safe for work art to get click throughs to something that’s definetly not safe for work.

You desperately want at least your attribution back, but since Tumblr is so horrifically set up you’re very sure there’s no way to do that.

Except you can!

Tumblr allows you to report copyright violations which includes removing your description and injecting their own link. But how to do this?

Step 1: Report them

Go to that human icon, click it to go to the drop down, and select “Report”.

Step 2: Select “Community Violation”

This behavior is explicitly against the Tumblr terms of service so that’s where it goes.

Step 3: Select “Misuse of your identity or work”

Step 4: Select “Misattribution or non-attribution”

Step 5: Select “yes”, this is your work that’s being misattributed.

Step 6: Select “yes”, you posted it to Tumblr.

Step 7: Select “Someone reblogged it and injected a link to their own blog.”

Step 8: Put in the link to your original post, the link to their reblog, and your email. Then submit!

You can get it the link to the reblog without going to their blog directly by going to the dash view of the blog, hovering over the top right corner, right clicking and selecting “copy link address.

While all of us here on this trash website enjoy picking on staff, in my experience they take care of this kind of thing relatively quickly (usually 2-3 days).

I hope this has helped at least some of you, and remember: only you can stop bot reblogs. [insert gif of Smokey the Bear here]

Thank you so much these kind of links are smothered all over my art posts and I didn’t think there was anything I could do about it

i did not know about this functionality. Here have a useful thing, friends!

fyi, if you are looking for a particular post in your blog and only remember a certain word or phrase, you can always do this:

http://ift.tt/1R3Ql8w

you’ve saved many lives

also if you want to cross-search your tags, try /search/tagone+tagtwo

it has helped me find so many things

The irony being that this is the post I’d lost.
