3. Is there a trope you wouldn’t touch with a 10-foot pole?
My hard no’s for writing are underage and non-con. There are some kinks that I won’t write as well. I can’t think of any tropes off the top of my head except maybe things like “Kill the woman/POC character to advance the white guy’s plot.”
17. Do you write your story from start to finish, or do you write scenes out of order?
Depends on how cooperative my muse is being! In the last year or two, I’ve gotten into the practice of writing very detailed outlines directly on the writing document, and sometimes writing scenes out of order if one scene/chapter is giving me trouble. It’s freeing to get away from that feeling that things have to be written in order, and you can’t write the thing at point G until you get through A-F. It has resulted in a lot fewer perpetual WiPs, and I’ve been overall happier with my stories as a result.
35. Would you ever kill of a canon character?
Depends on the character and why they need to die. I’m pretty fond of killing off bad guys and assholes.
This is actually something I’ve been thinking about, off and on, for a while. When I first started writing fanfiction there was a prevailing practice that you had to kill off/get rid of the female love interest(s) of your m/m ship characters, or otherwise prove that those men never loved their girlfriends, or that their girlfriends never loved them (this was often achieved by having the woman cheat, or do something really vicious to justify him leaving her in a way that made him the victim).
I was about 11 or 12 when I first started writing fanfiction and I didn’t question it - it was just what you had to do so you could get on with the rest of the story (There are many more reasons why this was/is a thing in m/m ff, but I won’t go on). So there were a lot of early stories I wrote where the first chapter begins with some method of getting rid of the girl. Once I realized that it was 100000% unnecessary, I haven’t had many occasions to kill off (non-bad guy) canon characters, and I don’t read stories that do treat their female characters that way.
