This is a humble post on some castle and fortification architectural terms - specifically, walls.  When writing, sometimes I cannot find the right word for a… *flails hands* thing, and I like to be accurate, when possible.  This is not The Definitive Post on Castle Architecture.  I’m sure someone else has made such a thing and they deserve applause.

A balustrade is a railing piece along a bridge, stair or balcony.  It is supported by balusters, which are short, typically decorative columns.  Balustrade may also refer to the entire column/railing construction.  Balusters along a stairway are often called bannisters.

A parapet is a short, protective barrier, usually no more than head-height, along a terrace, balcony or roof.  When a parapet is crenellated, meaning it has indentations at regular intervals, it is called a battlement.  The gaps in a battlement are called crenels or embrasures; the solid upright sections (the not-gaps) of a battlement are called merlons.

A bulwark is any kind of defensive wall or embankment.  A bastion is a structure projected outward from a castle or fortification.  The connecting wall between bastions or towers is a curtain wall.

A rampart is a thick defensive wall with a broad top, which is often crowned with a parapet or battlement.  A chemin de ronde is a protected walkway atop a rampart and behind a battlement, sometimes called a wall-walk if you don’t want to sound too fancy.

There are many more parts to castles and other fortifications.  Explore them and enjoy.  But if this helps anyone just a little, I will be pleased.

rejectedprincesses:

Earlier this year, Milla Star Bizzotto, a 9-year-old from Miami, finished BattleFrog’s 24-hour Xtreme race. Designed by a Navy SEAL, it consists of a 36 mile run, an 8 kilometer swim, and 25 obstacles that include a rope climb, crawling under barbed wire and climbing a 12-foot wall – each of which she had to do six times, over six laps.

She trained with her dad, a fitness coach, for nine months. She signed up for the BattleFrog to inspire kids of her age – she was doing it especially for kids who, like her, had been bullied.

“She literally murdered it. I was so convinced the race was going to crush her. I wanted to prove to her that it’s tougher than she thought. But when we finished it, all she wanted to do was another lap.”

“…he is the epitome of what a movie star is. I feel like he walks in a room and he just glows. He owns the oxygen… I feel so much safer when he’s around. It’s like when you’re a kid- if Dad’s with you nothing bad can happen. Not to make Downey seem like my father, but there’s something about him that makes you feel very protected.“

Iron Man 2 missing scene

Famous heart surgeon’s office. X-rays of Tony’s torso are laid out on the desk. Tony toys with his Rolex watch, doesn’t look up once.

HEART SURGEON (poking at the files)

It’s as I said, Mr. Stark: it’s impossible to remove the reactor without damaging your heart beyond repair, the shrapnel is lodged way too close to the left coronal artery. You’d die on the operating table. It’s a damn miracle you survived that first operation, that doctor of yours must have been a true wizard.

TONY STARK

He had very steady hands.

HEART SURGEON

Of course, if you could replace the Palladium with something that doesn’t combust, it’d put an end to your problem. But I’m no engineer.

TONY STARK (resetting the watch)

How long is left?

HEART SURGEON

Three months. Four months, tops. Palladium poisoning is very deadly. There’s some medication I can prescribe you to alleviate the pain if you want.

TONY STARK (with a little hand wave)

Sure, sure. Gimme all the good stuff.

SURGEON (embarassed, but expectant)

Also, it’s a bit…weird to ask, but…would you mind donating your body to our institute after you’re, ehm, gone? Body modifications as heavy as yours are so rare, and it would be such a valuable input to…

TONY STARK (shoots him a long look and nods after a beat, then wanders off, drumming on his arc reactor)

SURGEON (calling after him)

Best of luck Mr. Stark!

Watch ticks and ticks.

Ticking of the watch blends over into heavy metal music. In the limo. Tony lies on the backseat, washes down meds with alcohol, stares at the glass of scotch resting on his belly.

TONY STARK (casually)

Hey, Happy? Which of my car d’you like best?

HAPPY HOGAN (over his shoulder)

That’s a hard one, boss! Eh, well, the R8 is a thing of beauty, but I think I’d pick the Saleen. The noises that car makes! But in silver, orange isn’t really my thing. Why’d you ask, boss?

TONY STARK (removes his watch and puts it in his pocket)

Just curious! Let‘s get us to the airport as fast as we can, ok?

to some random point later in the movie: Saleen S7 in the background, now painted a gleaming silver

Mannn I cannot wait for Trump to be found guilty of treason and collusion with Russia. Donald Trump is a racist little fascist, and a hypocrite who has tiny little hands and a jacked up weave.

Puerto Rico is really in worse shape than Texas ever could have been. People are likely going to be without power and service for months.

I haven’t seen nearly as many good suggested charities, but here’s a link to the one the Puerto Rican government endorsed.

http://ift.tt/2ydHv0m

If you guys can spare, please help out Puerto Rico in this difficult time.

Folks, donating is good, but no amount of donation is going to equal the kind of infrastructural rebuilding PR needs.

CALL YOU REPRESENTATIVES AND CONGRESSMEN AND DEMAND THAT THE U.S. REMOVE THE JONES ACT AND ALSO SEND MONEY TO PR. The United States owns Puerto RIco and is not helping them. Moreover, they’ve essentially blockaded everyone BUT the United States from sending help. Call your reps and demand they do something.

The Jones act has been lifted, but only for 10 days. There have been bills proposed to lift it longer or even permanently. Please call or write or do something to tell your representatives and congressmen to support this.

Puerto Rico’s going to be without power for six months, minimum.

People are already dying.

I know people who are still trying to get in touch with family, or haven’t heard from anyone for a week or more. The looks on their faces when I ask about their families make me want to cry.
