Full text:

Today is an historic day with the inauguration of the 45th President of the United States.

Soon after confirmation the following issues were removed from Whitehouse.gov:

Health Care

Civil Rights

LGBT

Immigration

Climate Change

The Spanish translation and Accessiblity links were removed from the bottom of the page. All of these things may be restored but for now we don’t know if, when, or what they will look like.

I just want to take a moment to remind everyone that we at Imzy are very purposely welcoming and inclusive. We want you to feel comfortable, at home, and, although we usually avoid such loaded terms as ‘safe’, we want you to feel safe here. This is not a place for hate or intolerance.

Many people feel and may be endangered by the president’s views and plans while others feel emboldened seeing their political views being accepted as mainstream for the first time in decades.

We choose to stand with those being further marginalized and threatened. We truly believe in the value of diversity and inclusion in our company and our communities, online and in “real life”.

It’s important that we stand together and support each other on this day and every day for the next four to eight years (and everyday thereafter).

Thanks so much for being here with us. We appreciate each and every one of you.

Don’t look now, but this spineless sea creature may be able to count better than your toddler.

Cuttlefish need to be savvy if they want to eat. They’re always on the lookout for shrimp, fish or crabs. When a cuttlefish spots a potential victim, it shoots out two specialized, sucker-bearing tentacles and nabs it. Since these hunters have to make constant judgments about which prey are worth targeting, it would make sense for them to have advanced cognitive skills—say, the ability to count.

To find out whether this was true, Tsang-I Yang and Chuan-Chin Chiao, of Taiwan’s National Tsing Hua University, brought some Sepia pharaonis cuttlefish into the lab for a math exam.

The researchers hatched cuttlefish eggs and waited until the animals were a month old. Then they started testing the young cephalopods. In each test, a cuttlefish waited on one end of a tank, and researchers lowered a two-chambered box with clear walls into the other end. A partition jutted out from the center of the box toward the cuttlefish. As it swam toward the apparatus, the cuttlefish would have to make a choice between one chamber and the other.

As soon as the cuttlefish made its decision and veered toward one side of the box, the researchers yanked the apparatus back out of the water. (This was likely annoying to the cuttlefish, but they got fed at the end of the testing session.)

To see how well the animals can count, the researchers put different numbers of shrimp into each of the box’s chambers, ranging from 1 to 5. If there were 5 shrimp in one side of the box and just 1 in the other, the choice ought to be easy. But could cuttlefish reliably choose 2 shrimp over 1, or 3 shrimp over 2? What about 5 over 4?

The scientists tested 54 cuttlefish. As expected, the animals had no problem picking a bunch of shrimp over a single shrimp. But they also passed every other test they were given. Cuttlefish were significantly more likely to pick the side of the box with more shrimp, even when choosing between 4 and 5.

Cuttlefish took longer to make these decisions as the ratios between the numbers got smaller (for example, 5 to 4 versus 4 to 3). Chiao says this is evidence that the cephalopods were actually counting the shrimp on each side, rather than judging the quantities at a glance.

Further experiments ruled out other possible explanations: Rather than counting, do cuttlefish just look for a denser batch of shrimp? No, because when researchers crowded small numbers of shrimp into tighter spaces to increase their density, the cuttlefish still picked the bigger number. Do cuttlefish simply seek out the wiggliest pile of prey? No again, as the researchers showed using boxes of dead shrimp.

Math isn’t the only factor influencing a cuttlefish’s decisions, though. Cuttlefish prefer live victims, and when researchers offered their subjects 1 live shrimp or 2 dead ones, they chose the former. When offered one big, fat shrimp or two smaller shrimp, hungry cuttlefish took the big one—but cuttlefish that had already eaten chose the two small shrimp. This might be because the big shrimp is a more tempting prize, but riskier for a young hunter to grapple with. For a cuttlefish who isn’t especially hungry, it might not be worth the risk.

Chiao says he wasn’t surprised by how well the cephalopods performed.

“We know that [the] cuttlefish has a complex brain and a sophisticated neural system,” he says. “Cuttlefish have to search for food constantly, so having number sense is important for their life.” Although the experiments stopped at 5 shrimp, Chiao suspects cuttlefish might even be able to count a little bit higher.

Similar research in year-old humans showed that they could judge the difference between 1, 2 or 3 items, but failed when quantities got any bigger. Rhesus macaques could judge between numbers going up to 4, but no higher. So this study, the authors write, “implies that cuttlefish are at least equivalent to infants and primates in terms of number sense.”

I’ve seen a lot of people who say S4 doesn’t make sense to them. We’ve got a variety of theories trying to make the story fit some different storyline than what is being shown on screen.

I know some of that is fueled by inconsistencies in filming—possible continuity errors, changes in wording, things they find unrealistic. But it seems that one of the core issues for a lot of people is Mary.

I can understand that. Why was she even brought into the story in the first place? Some adaptations skip her entirely. People wanted to keep the focus of the story on John and Sherlock. They didn’t want a trio.

Those are perfectly fair objections. And I don’t blame people for being upset about the fact that she turned out to be an assassin and that she shot Sherlock, etc. I thought that some of the Mary-as-villain theories were really interesting and would have been fun in the story.

But that’s not where the writers took things, and now some fans are having a hard time accepting that Mary could be all those things and still be loved by John and Sherlock.

Yes, loved. The reaction to her death, if nothing else, makes it clear that both men loved her very much. They grieve her, deeply. Her memory becomes John’s inner voice, his conscience.

How can that be? How can the show portray her as kind, sweet, funny, insightful, and yet also portray her as selfish, ruthless, secretive, and a killer?

Well, it’s called an antihero. And it’s something few female characters are allowed to be.

More below the cut…

Okay we’re going through this bit by bit.

First of all, this is the first thing that pops up when you visit the website:

But wait, it gets worse.

Once you get in, you see that Trump’s inauguration takes up the entire main page. You know what? I’m fine with that. I mean it makes sense.

What I’m not fine with is this:

As of yesterday (I’m on the Wayback Machine), these are the issues that the Obama Administration listed, leading to pages which went into detail about these issues and what the Administration was doing about them.

Again, that’s from the Obama Administration.

This is the current Issues Tab under the Trump Administration:

No, I haven’t cropped it. That’s it. That’s the entire list. All of those are the issues that Trump’s Administration cares about.

The civil rights page? Gone. Climate change page? Gone. Health care page? Gone. Disabilities page? Gone. It’s all gone. Everything is gone.

They also completely took away all of the pages on Obama’s initiatives, all of the pages on internships and involvement in the White house, all of the pages on different ways to protest (other than the We The People petitions), and for some reason, they even took out most of the pages in the history section. The famous virtual tour? Gone. A detailed history about the architecture, the decor, even theee customs and traditions? Gone.

 But here’s the best part.

Most of the ‘Briefing’ section has been cleaned out as well and the tab for weekly addresses has been completely removed.

Well isn’t that just…disturbing?

It’s worth noting that this happens every presidency, the Obama administration’s whitehouse.gov will be archived and none of this was taken down by Clownstick himself. Not that it makes me feel ANY better about the next four years, but for once it’s not on DOFUS

So just for you, I spent the past half hour tediously searching through the Wayback Machine.

This was the page Obama had right after he took office after Bush:

Notice how, even though the website changed overnight, he still put in a huge list of issues including virtually every one listed on the website yesterday?

But wait, there’s more.

I went back and looked at how Bush’s page looked before the Obama Administration changed it. And guess what? Bush had an entire list of issues that resembled the ones listed on the website yesterday.

But wait!

There’s more!

Back when the Internet was new and the webpage was just a bunch of text, Clinton had an entire list of issues like the ones listed on the website yesterday.

So, no, this isn’t something that always happens. The website changes but the issues have always stayed the same and they’ve always been prominently displayed.

Until now.

People are acting like his team has not had literally the entire transition period to get his webpage together. They didn’t get this as a last-second assignment before the inauguration. There is absolutely no excuse for this. It’s either a complete and total disregard for these issues, or it’s a complete and utter failure to prepare. Both of those are unacceptable.

I love posts like this with the full receipts…
